Becoming independent – I can read and enjoy a whole story by myself. Read with Biff Chip and Kipper
Read with Oxford Stage 5 is for children who are reading confidently, silently and independently most of the time. They will use their phonics knowledge automatically to tackle words they don’t know and will be able to make predictions about what happens next in stories.
Once a child has learnt all their sounds and is able to decode and blend new words accurately, they need support to develop their reading fluency and confidence. Essentially, they need to go from learning to read, to reading to learn, and to reading independently for pleasure.
Children at Read with Oxford Stage 5 can usually:- Read quickly and silently using their phonics knowledge automatically (except for the occasional very unfamiliar word).
- Read (on sight) a wide range of common tricky words (e.g. ‘beautiful’, ‘eye’).
- Read aloud with good pace and fluency, taking note of punctuation and sometimes using expression.
- Begin to make fewer mistakes while reading and correct them most of the time.
- Explain their ideas and opinions about a story or information book in a lot of detail.
- Understand that there are different types of fiction and non-fiction books.
- Read a short Stage 5 book in one sitting or, for longer books with chapters, at least one complete chapter.
